How to Build a Stone Wall

Oklahoma stone is perfect for improving your outdoor space. Building a stone wall will create privacy, or it will provide protection from erosion on a sloped property when you add a retaining wall. The height and style of your wall is your choice. It could be rustic, modern, tall, or short. It all depends on you.

Building a Stone Wall

Begin by laying out and marking the length of the wall. A string, rope, or even garden hose are perfect for establishing the area of your wall.

Once you have finished the layout, begin to dig a trench that is six inches wider than the stone and six inches deep. Add roughly three inches of gravel and tamp it with a tamper until the gravel layer is two inches deep and level.

Lay the stones down next to each other, making sure that they fit snuggly. Level the stones as you work, using a torpedo level to ensure that the front and back and sides are completely level.

It may be necessary to cut stones that are longer than others with a wet saw.

Install drainage using a PVC pipe. Begin by placing more gravel behind the stone and tamping it. Lay the pipe so that it runs along the wall, and cover it with more gravel. Place textile fabric on the top to prevent erosion and fold it over in the trench.

Start preparing your mortar if you are using it.

Use a trowel to evenly distribute the mortar on each Oklahoma stone and build the next layer. Insert the fabric into the mortar to secure it.

Level the stones and from the front to the back and on the sides.

Add each layer by staggering the stones so that the center of the stone covers the seam below.

Carefully remove the excess mortar from the stone before it dries.

Wait until the mortar is dry before adding any capstones.
